Gladwyne - Presidential Campaign of 1896 & its connection to the Wizard of Oz Online
Author Evan Weiner joins the library for a virtual presentation about the 1896 election between William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan and how it has had a lasting impact on political insiders more than 125 years later. It was the last election of the agriculture society and created the city versus rural divide. It was the first election of the industrial era and introduced big money into politics. The 1896 campaign may have inspired the writing of “The Wizard of Oz” , published by L. Frank Baum in 1900 and the 1939 movie of the same name.
