Join author and filmmaker Jennifer Lin and musician Booker Rowe to discuss “Beethoven in Beijing,” an oral history of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s historic 1973 journey to China.

We will be showing 20 minutes of the documentary, Beethoven in Beijing followed by a conversation with both Jennifer Lin and Musician Booker Rowe. A Q & A will follow the presentation.

Jennifer Lin is an award-winning journalist, author, and documentary filmmaker. Her oral history of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s historic 1973 journey to China, Beethoven in Beijing, is based on a documentary by the same name that was nationally broadcast on PBS's Great Performances. For 31 years, Jennifer worked at The Philadelphia Inquirer as a reporter, including posts as a foreign correspondent in China, a financial correspondent on Wall Street, and a national correspondent in Washington DC. She is also author of a family memoir, Shanghai Faithful: Betrayal and Forgiveness in a Chinese Christian Family. Jennifer is currently working on a documentary, Beyond Yellowface, about eliminating racial stereotypes from ballet and opera.

Booker Rowe is a former violinist for the Philadelphia Orchestra and among the first two African American musicians for the orchestra. Booker, who grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Yale University, traveled to China in 1973 and returned with the orchestra 11 times. He retired from the orchestra in 2020.
